VerdictThe Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM gives you lots of bangs for your bucks. The biggest strength remains to surprisingly high level of resolution across the range. The low level of chromatic aberrations (CAs) are also contributing to the subjective quality perception. Image distortions remain moderate at all settings whereas vignetting is a bit on the high side at max. aperture. A more significant weakness is the rather mediocre bokeh (quality of the out-of-focus blur). Out-of-focus highlights aren't really perfectly rendered - especially towards the borders - and the general blur can be rather rough. That being said you should keep in mind that such slow speed lenses are not designed to be a bokeh king anyway.
The build quality is fine for a lens in this class thanks to decent quality plastics, tight build tolerances and smooth control rings. Regarding the target market and low price tag, you may surely forgive the plastic mount. We really like Canon's STM AF which is both fast as well as silent. Image stabilization is a proven technology over at Canon and, of course, it does a nice job on this lens as well.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is an obvious choice for those on a budget. It can deliver high quality results with only a few compromises. Despite the new optical design, the differences are fairly marginal compared to the initial EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS.
However, the non-rotating front element as well as the STM are notable improvements in this comparison. Well done Canon ... again!
