Verdict
While it may not be obvious from the charts, the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary surprised us in a positive way - at least when taking its comparatively low price tag into account.
Yhe lens is generally capable of delivering a good to very good quality in the image center. At 600mm you may prefer to stop down a little to get the most out of it. Yes, the image corners are not hot but then does this really matter? You main subject tends to remain in or near the center image zone and the rest ... well ... who cares? Lateral CAs are usually nothing to worry about. Same goes for image distortions. Vignetting is comparatively pronounced at fully open aperture albeit not much of an issue from f/8 onward. The quality of the bokeh is surprisingly good and better than usual in this lens class. Bokeh fringing is not an issue due to the relatively small max. aperture.
The build quality of the Sigma lens is very good despite targeting the lower end of the market. It even features weather sealing. The OS is efficient even at 600mm and both in general OS mode as well as during panning. The AF is relatively fast but stays shorts of modern Canon lenses.
Its bigger cousin, the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports, is, of course, a little better across the range so if you can tolerate its heavy-weight and higher price tag, it is the superior lens. However, they aren't worlds apart either and the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary is really a steal for the money. An alternative may also be the new Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 VC G2 which sits in between the two in terms of pricing (yet to be reviewed).
