Introduction

In terms of construction, the 14-24mm f/2.8 ART is almost a twin of the 12-24mm f/2.8 ART and the same characteristics apply - most importantly a superb build quality. The body is based on a combination of metal components and Sigma's TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) material. The zoom and focus rings operate smoothly. The most striking feature of the lens is, of course, it's immense bulb-like front element so front filters are a no-go here. The good news is, however, that the vulnerable front element is recessed within the deep built-in hood thus there's some "natural" protection here. Sigma also applied a special coating on the front element that is both water- and oil-repellent. The physical length remains constant throughout the zoom range although this is only true because of the lens hood. There is actually an inner lens tube that moves when zooming. Being a "late" ART lens, it also features a dust- and splash-proof design. The front cap is put over the front of the lens thus it is not of the usual clip-on type.

The AF is based on Sigma's newly designed HSM drive which is both quite fast and near noiseless. Full-time manual focusing is available. Sigma offers various additional services around this product. For a fee, you can let Sigma convert the petal-shaped hood into a barrel-shaped one (exposing the vulnerable front element). Sigma also offers a mount-conversion service thus if you change your system, you can keep your lens. Using the Mount Converter MC-11, you can also stick to the existing Canon/Sigma-mount and mount it to Sony E-mount cameras. And finally, the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 HSM DG ART is also compatible with Sigma's USB dock which can be used to fine-tune the AF behaviour.
