VerdictThe Samyang 135mm T2.2 ED UMC CINE DS (Samyang 135mm f/2 ED UMC) is a pleasant surprise - at least regarding its potential. The image quality is almost stunning with very good results at T2.2 and an excellent if not outstanding quality at medium aperture settings and across the image frame. A very low amount of lateral CAs also helps to increase the sharpness perception. Distortions are absent whereas the vignetting is quite typical for a full format lens in this class. If anything the bokeh is a bit of a weak spot. Out-of-focus highlights aren't overly smooth and the foreground blur could be better as well. The critical background blur is good though and the lack of bokeh fringing is even better - we've seen this (or rather we didn't) in very few lenses so far!
The mechanical quality of the Samyang lens is pretty much excellent. It is tightly assembled and features super-smooth control rings. The physical size remains the same thanks to internal focusing. However, there's still room for improvements regarding the lens hood.
While this sounds impressive, it is worth to end this review with a word of caution. We don't really have much of an issue with all-manual lenses till 50mm but at 135mm things are really getting tricky. Using a conventional DSLR viewfinder is basically prohibitive here. This lens requires either a split-image viewfinder screen or Live-View (or an electronic viewfinder) and, if possible at all, a tripod.
