Verdict

The image center resolution is quite high, especially towards the short end of the focal range. The borders and corners are a different story though, offering a rollercoaster ride from poor to very good values throughout the zoom and aperture range.

Vignetting is actually quite well controlled, except at 18mm wide open. CAs are rather high, as is distortion.

The build quality is ok, especially now that Nikon adressed the issue of zoom creeping with the current VR II model. AF is virtually silent thanks to AF-S and quite fast for a super zoom (less so in absolute terms). The optical stabilization works very well, even though we were not able to confirm the promised efficiency of 4 stops. In our field tests it seemed more like 3 stops, but actual results will of course vary with the individual photographer.

In summary the Nikkor is a very capable super zoom lens, however one should be aware of its flaws and limitations in the field. They are the price to pay for the convenience of carrying just a single lens.
