Verdict

The Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR offers a nice package of a comfortable focal range, optical stabilization and very high resolution figures, excep for the longest focal length. On the downside there is rather pronounced distortion and CAs. The amount of vignetting is about average for this lens class.

The build quality is Ok but not really something to rave about either. Thanks to a silentwave drive (AF-S) the AF is nearly silent, but not overly fast.

Given the very moderate price tag it's certainly an attractive offer if you can live with or work around its shortcomings. Compared to the entry-level kit lenses, it's a quite affordable upgrade regarding zoom range. On the other hand, it can also work as a one lens travel solution if you don't need the extra focal range of super zoom lenses or simply don't want to pay the high price of these lenses.
