Verdict

The AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD combines the largest zoom range currently available with Tamron's reliable optical stabilization, all packed into a very compact lens with good but not stellar build quality. Sharpness is generally very good in the image center, but suffers towards the borders and corners when the lens is used with wide open aperture. Towards the upper zoom range not even stopping down helps to lift the border sharpness to good values.

Vignetting is well controlled for such a large zoom range. CAs are low to moderate for most focal lengths, but very high at the long end of the zoom range.

Distortion is annoyingly high, even for a lens in this class, which is expected to show quite some of it. The bokeh quality can be very rough, even with not very demanding subjects.

So, optically the lens isn't all that great. Its biggest advantage compared to the competition is not its optical performance, but its compact size.
