Verdict

The Sigma AF 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 DC HSM OS is an interesting lens with a couple of high and lows, which is quite typical for such extreme zoom range lenses. The resolution characteristic is generally decent - only the soft borders at longer focal lengths may be really objectionable. The vignetting could be better at 18mm and 125mm at max. aperture but frankly that's also nothing out of the ordinary in this class. CAs are comparatively well controlled, while distortion is a bit pronounced at the short end and around 50mm.

The build quality is on a very high level for this lens class. The AF performance is nothing special nor bad either. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) can give you a couple of extra f-stops in extreme situations but don't expect wonders - the specified gain of up to 4-stops is unlikely in field conditions. All-in-all a sound package when taking the pricing into account.

The F-mount version of the Sigma competes with the Nikon AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR, which offers a little less range and lower build quality, but offers a bit better resolution across the zoom range at an even lower price.
