Verdict
Tamron's first fast stabilised tele zoom offers very good performance. Image resolution is excellent in the image center, the borders and corners aren't quite as impressive, but still good to very good across the frame. Vignetting and CAs are well controlled, bokeh is quite smooth for a zoom lens and distortion, while still present and visible, better than average in this lens class.
Build quality is very good and nothing really to complain about, even though in direct comparison to Nikon's and Canon's lenses in this market segments it feels a little less sturdy.
Thanks to an ultrasonic drive, autofocus is very fast. The optical stabilisation works very well and actually offers a more stable viewfinder image than the Nikkor lenses.
The only real issue of the lens is its considerable amount of focus breathing, so the reduction of focal length at close focus distances.
At the time of this review, Tamron already released an updated version of this lens (G2, or model A025), however given its solid performance, the model A009 still looks like an attractive alternative to expensive Nikkor lenses, especially now that it's available used quite often and going price is 800 EUR or even less.
