Verdict
Given the increased size (and also the increased price), we had high hopes the Nikkor AF-S 24-70/2.8 E ED VR would outperform it's predecessor in many regards. Unfortunately, it doesn't.
The only thing that really improved is border and corner performance at wide-angle settings, plus the field curvature has been brought down to less troublesome levels.
Apart from that, there isn't really much improvement. In fact distortion, vignetting and CAs are worse, to a surprisingly high extent. It feels that around anything that can be software corrected, Nikon was particularly lazy when designing this lens.
The build quality is on a very high level, but that was already true for the predecessor and quite frankly should be a given at this price point.
In summary, the lens leaves us mostly underwhelmed. Despite partial improvements, we can't justify giving this lens a higher or even the same rating as its precedessor.
