VerdictEven though the Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED is the oldest lens in Nikon's current line-up of professional wide angle zooms, it certainly doesn't look outdated. Far from it, actually. The sharpness in the image center is oustanding, stopped down the lens delivers very good resolution at the borders and corners, too. Wide open, however, the borders and especially the extreme corners lack sharpness.
Vignetting is a bit on the high side, especially at the wide end of the zoom range. CAs are well controlled for such a wide lens and image distortion, while no doubt pronounced and clearly visible at both ends of the zoom range, is actually a bit better than average in this lens class.
The build quality of the lens is excellent and compared to newer lenses only lacks real dust protection. Thanks to a silent-wave drive the AF is virtually silent and very fast.
All three currently available pro-grade wide-angle Nikkor zooms have their advantages and disadvantages. However, unless someone really needs one of the unique features of the other two lenses (like the extra wide angle of the AF-S 14-24 or the VR feature in the AF-S 16-35 VR) the AF-S 17-35/2.8 probably combines most advantages into a single product.
