VerdictEven though the lens is already discontinued and looks a bit dated next to current Nikkor lenses, it still delivers impressive performance on our D3x test camera. At all tested focal lenghts, the center resolution is very good wide open and excellent when stopped down. With only minor exceptions, the borders and corners show very good resolution throughout the whole zoom and aperture range.
Distortions are visible especially at both ends of the zoom range. CAs and vignetting are well controlled.
The only issue of the lens is the bokeh quality, which we have seen better (mostly from newer lenses).
Once targeted at professional users, the build quality of the lens is impressive. Thanks to AF-S, the autofocus works silently and very fast.
Compared to current lenses, the Nikkor AF-S 28-70/2.8 offers a bit less zoom range at the short end. But given its impressive performance, it's still an option to consider. Unfortunately it is only available used today, so one needs to carefully check if a a lens offered for sale has been treated well.
