Verdict
The Nikkor AF-S 35/1.8 G ED is a welcome addition to the range of Nikon's moderately fast primes. It delivers very good resolution wide open already and excellent sharpness when slightly stopped down, especially in the image center. The moderate amount of barrel distortion is typical for wide-angle lenses in this class, so nothing really to complain about.
But there are also a two drawbacks: the amount of vignetting, which is quite high at wide open aperture. However, that's something that can be cured by stopping down - if the subject and the available light allows. The other issue, where we expected more from the lens, is the bokeh quality. It's not terribly bad, in fact most 35mm primes don't shine in this regard. However, being a new design we had high hopes for better performance here.
The build quality is on the same good level as all other recently introduced f/1.8 Nikkor primes... except that annoying focus ring behaviour during manual focus operation. Thanks to a silent-wave drive, the autofocus works silently and quite fast.
So, in summary: a very solid performer for an adequate, not too high price.
