Verdict

The Sony E 30mm f/3.5 macro lens delivered a rather disappointing performance on the Sony NEX 7. The center image quality is absolutely great but the border- and especially corner-quality is sub-standard. The rather high amount of lateral CAs isn't helpful either. You may argue that this is irrelevant for (non-repro) macro photography but many users would certainly like to use it as general purpose lens and the lens has certainly limited capabilities here. The image quality is generally good around f/8 but avoid large aperture settings. This is a good idea to bypass the rather heavy amount of vignetting at f/3.5 anyway. Image distortions shouldn't be a big issue but we've seen better macro lenses here as well.

Typical for Sony E lenses the build quality is very good thanks to a tightly assembled metal body including a metal focus ring. It is a "true" IF (internal focus) lens so it does not change its physical length during focus operations and the front element doesn't rotate either.

As already mentioned the 24 megapixel sensor of the Sony NEX 7 seems to have a rather difficult characteristic especially regarding its resolution capabilities at the image corners. This behavior has been confirmed by user observations in the meanwhile (feel free to google). This is a bit unfortunate because we feel that the sensor shouldn't have such a deep impact on the lens quality. The lens quality will be somewhat better on Sony's 16 megapixel sensor.
