Distortion

Image distortions are relatively moderate which is surely a positive side effect from the short zoom range. At the 11mm setting, there is a medium barrel distortion that slowly shifts to a slight barrel distortion at 16mm.

Vignetting

The vignetting characteristic is better than usual in this class. There's still some light falloff at 11mm f/2.8 but that's pretty much gone from f/4 already. The longer focal lengths have an even more moderate vignetting.

PS: If you compare this to the review of the old mk I, you may notice lower vignetting figures. That relates to the less aggressive tone curve used in the EOS 7D II.

MTF (resolution)

The Tokina AF 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX (mk I) delivered impressive results in our legacy test (at 15 megapixels). The mk II is still darn good on the EOS 7D II albeit the higher pixel density emphasizes a few weaknesses. The sweet spot of the lens is at 11mm. The center quality is already excellent at f/2.8. The borders are very good and the corners are just slightly worse. Stopping down to f/4 increases the quality still with a very good image quality across the frame. This is maintained at f/5.6. Slight diffraction effects set in at f/8 but that's not an issue here in real life. However, you shouldn't stop down beyond if maximum quality is the priority. The characteristic is similar at 13mm with just a hint more softness in the corners at f/2.8. That changes at 16mm f/2.8 where the corners are poor. Fortunately, they improve rapidly at f/4 already and the quality is on par with the other settings at f/5.6.

The centering quality of the tested sample was Okay. The field curvature is comparatively low.

Chromatic Aberrations (CAs)

Lateral CAs (color shadows at the image borders) haven't been a strength of Tokina lenses and that doesn't change with the Tokina AF 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX II. The average CA pixel width at the image borders is around the 2.5px mark which will be visible in many high contrast scenes.
