VerdictGood things come to those who wait, right? Well, not this time, I'm afraid.
There are a few things that we've got used to expect from a higher grade standard zoom lens in the years since this lens was initially announced, like optical stabilization and a supersonic AF drive. The Tokina lens has neither - well, Tokina in general has neither. The lens doesn't even feature an integrated AF motor and that alone renders it very unattractive for the majority of Nikon DX shooters.
Nonetheless, with its quite unique zoom range the lens could still be very interesting for Nikonians with higher grade DX cameras. Unfortunately there are several issues regarding optical performance.
Center sharpness is generally very good to excellent, but the borders and corners give mixed resolution results, ranging from very good to so low that they don't even show up on our MTF scale. For most of the zoom range the lens shows quite high pincushion distortion. Vignetting is very high at the short end wide open, but can be cured by stopping down. CAs however are very high at both ends of the zoom range, regardless of the aperture chosen.
Unless someone really needs exactly the zoom range of this Tokina lens, there are more attractive options available that offer a better package of performance and features, like the Nikon 16-85 VR or 18-105 VR DX lenses.
