Verdict
The Nikkor AF-S 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED DX proved to be a very good performer. The center resolution figures are very high and the border quality is also impressive, allthough a little less field curvature may be desirable at 12mm. The extreme corners struggle a bit on the high density DX sensor, but stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8 the quality is good to very good here, too.
CAs and vignetting are about average for a dedicated DX lens, while distortion, though still noticeable especially at the wide end, is well controlled for a lens in this class.
The build quality is fine, but you would usually expect a little more from a lens in this price class.
The price is probably the lens' biggest issue. There are several significantly less expensive competitors, most of them offering the same or even a larger zoom range.
However, the Nikkor is one of the very few lenses that sells used for considerably lower prices than new. Units in good condition can occasionally be bought for half of the price of new ones. Which is certainly another indication, that the lens is somewhat overpriced compared to its competition.
Still, being one of the oldest designs on the market, it performs quite well on a modern camera.
