Verdict
The Olympus Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 ED is a great little lens. Technically it has no significant flaws - it is very sharp at all mainstream aperture settings. The amount of vignetting at 14mm @ f/3.5 could be a little better maybe but then this is rather typical in this class. Distortions and lateral CAs are well controlled. All-in-all the performance can be indeed compared to something like the mighty and pricey Olympus Zuiko Digital 12-60mm f/2.8-4ED - in the overlapping focal length and aperture range of course ... The latter is a bit of a limiting factor regarding its depth-of-field capabilities. In full format terms the Zuiko behaves like a "28-84mm f/6.7-11" here (not in terms of light gathering of course) so selective focusing is next to impossible except in very close focus situations. You will usually not need this for landscape photography but there're certainly more suitable lenses for portraits for instance.
The mechnical quality of the Zuiko is pretty good - it's an all-plastic construction but it's tightly manufactured with no wobbling parts. The AF is speedy and accurate both in "standard" AF as well as in LiveView AF mode. Regarding the output quality of the lens the price/performance ratio is simply outstanding!
