Verdict

So is the Leica 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS THE LENS you'd take that that lonely tropical island (if you could take just one) ? Yep, it could be the one although it's not totally flawless but then no lens is. However, it is both sharp and contrasty throughout the range - in fact it's far more harmonious than any other similar lenses tested to date here. The level of barrel distortion is very high at 14mm whereas the problem is basically negligible at other focal lengths. Vignetting is also very well controlled except at 14mm f/3.5. The only real weakness are very strong lateral CAs at both 14mm and 150mm. This is correctable but out-of-the-box this can be disturbing. The quality of the bokeh is decent for such a lens although the effect is naturally underdeveloped due to the small max. aperture. The build quality is very high but we'd wish to have a dust sealing in this lens due to the air "pumping" (thus dust sucking) during zooming. The AF works virtually silent and it's sufficiently fast - just don't expect it to be a speed daemon. Panasonic's Mega OIS seems to be less efficient (~2 f-stops) than Canon's IS or Nikon's VR. All-in-all the best of the breed within the "super" zoom lens class at this stage and as such possibly also worth the very high price!
