Verdict

The Samsung NX 60mm f/2.8 Macro ED OIS SSA is the first macro lens for the NX system and as such a very welcome new option. Regarding its relatively large aperture it will surely also find its friends among portrait photographers. So is it worth it ? Well, it depends. The lens is capable of delivering an excellent center resolution straight from f/2.8. The borders/corners are quite soft but unless you are into repro photography this may not be much of an issue. The overall quality is pretty good at f/4 and quite impressive between f/5.6 and f/11. There is some vignetting at f/2.8 but it's not a real problem beyond. Distortions are nothing to worry about. A highlight is the quality of the bokeh - background blur is very buttery and out-of-focus hightlights are nicely rendered at large aperture settings. Bokeh fringing is quite well controlled.

The build quality is on a very high level. Typical for modern macro lens designs it has a constant physical length across the focus range. Samsung's new SSA AF drive is both quite fast and virtually silent. The option of using full time manual override is certainly appreciated by some users. The optical image stabilier (OIS) works perfectly fine at conventional focus distances but don't expect it to be overly efficient at macro settings (which is normal actually). At around 450EUR/600US$ it is quite affordable in absolute terms, but it is primarily attractive if you want to do macro photography on your NX system.
