Verdict
In terms of market visibility Samsung NX is probably the weakest mirrorless system at the moment but regarding their lens lineup they have more attractive offerings than e.g. Sony and Nikon (as of the time of this review). The Samsung NX 85mm f/1.4 ED SSA is certainly a highlight among all mirrorless lens offerings. The optical performance of the lens is very impressive. It is already sharp at f/1.4 and that’s including the difficult corner region. Stopped down the center quality is excellent and the borders/corners reach very good levels. Lateral CAs and distortions are very low and not relevant. There’s a some of light-falloff at f/1.4 but we’ve certainly seen worse here. The quality of the bokeh is very good especially regarding the highlight rendition and the background blur.
There’s also nothing to complain about on the mechanical side. It is clearly a lens made to very high quality standards. The new SSA AF drive is no speed demon so you wouldn’t really want to use it for action photography. However, it should be fast enough for its primary purpose (portrait photography).
The Samsung NX 85mm f/1.4 ED SSA is a lighthouse product – it’s a truly professional grade lens and the best news is that it’s even a comparatively affordable one (in Europe at least). It stands out from the crowd – also quality-wise – which is why we recommend it highly to all Samsung NX users.
