Verdict

The Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT SAM may be a budget-oriented prime lens but regarding its performance it may even be a viable option for enthusiasts. Resolution-wise it delivers a very solid performance. A large center portion of the image field is very sharp at f/1.8 and f/2.2 - and this is where it counts at such a setting from a field perspective. The extreme corners are still good but not quite as impressive. Expect a rather soft contrast at max. aperture though. The image quality is very fine across the frame at f/2.8 and highly impressive between f/4 and f/11 - especially at f/5.6 where the lens delivers its peak performance. Vignetting is a substantial problem at large aperture settings so if needed it is advisable to correct this either via image post-processing or by stopping down to f/2.8. Lateral CAs are quite low at all settings. The quality of the bokeh is good - specifically regarding the smoothness of the background blur. Bokeh fringing is somewhat visible at f/1.8 and f/2.2 but it's not an issue beyond.

It may surprise you but regarding the sum of its optical qualities it is actually a better choice than the "mighty" (albeit outdated) Sony 35mm f/1.4 G - Sony's professional grade full format 35mm lens. The AF performance of the new SAM drive is pretty decent and we didn't really experience any issues with AF accuracy during our field testing. The cost-cutting measurements are fairly obvious on the mechanical side - it's a "plastic-fantastic" lens which feels a little cheap unfortunately. However, technically this doesn't limit its capabilities and the low pricing may ease the headaches in this aspect a little.
