Verdict
Usually, Canon gets it right but not this time. The Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 STM IS is a bit ... meh. It is very sharp at 55mm but the middle range and long end are substandard. This is accompanied by noticeable lateral CAs at 200mm although they don't reach extreme levels. The vignetting is generally high at max. aperture. On the upside, image distortions are low.
So far we have been quite impressed by the build quality of the reviewed Canon EF-M lenses but the Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 STM IS falls a little short here - at least relative to its direct cousins. It is made of plastic down to the mount. However, given the low weight, this may be an acceptable compromise. That being said, there's only a marginal wobbling of the inner lens tube and the control rings operate smoothly. The AF is a bit on the slow side but then our test camera (EOS M3) may have an impact here as well. The image stabilizer is a little less efficient than usual but it does its job.
Generally, we'd recommend looking somewhere else but that's easily said if you already invested in the system. However, you could go for the Canon EF-M 55-250mm f/4-5.6 STM IS via the Canon EF-M/EF adapter for instance. Thanks to the STM drive it should work nicely on an EOS M camera. The result would be a substantially bigger setup though.
The primary value propositions of the Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 STM IS are its compact size and very low weight.
