Verdict

The Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 IF-ED delivers very good to excellent resolution in the image center. The borders and corners perform on a slightly lower level, but still show good to very good sharpness.

Except for the wide end, distortion is well under control. Vignetting is slightly pronounced wide open, but no issue stopped down. CAs and bokeh fringing are moderate. The lens shows very smooth bokeh.

Once targeted at professional users, the build quality is of course excellent. Even though it's a first generation AF-S lens, the sonic wave driven autofocus works very fast and silent.

The only real drawback of the lens is its very weak tripod collar. However, 3rd party alternatives are available and highly recommended to anyone who considers to use the lens on a tripod or monopod.

Even though the lens is long out of production, it's still a very attractive option for anyone who wants a quality f/2.8 tele zoom and does not need optical stabilization.
