VerdictThe EF 300mm f/4 USM L IS is an excellent lens both regarding build and optical quality. The
naked lens performed near-flawless both in the lab as well as in the field where the IS helped
in many situations. Combined with the EF 1.4x II converter the quality remains on high level
but there's a little penalty here equivalent to about a school mark. Subjectively there's also
a slight loss of contrast which cannot be surprising regarding the number of optical elements
involved in the converter combination.
Two samples of this lens were tested during the last year with the 2nd one being substantially
better. All tested lenses are supplied by users so they've already seen some field usage over
time. Nonetheless the variations in quality are disappointing for a designated L class lens.
Assuming you can get a good one the EF 300mm f/4 USM L IS is a highly recommended lens.
