Verdict

The 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD delivers very solid performance for a super zoom lens. The center resolution is generally very good to (just) excellent, at least when used wide open. Stopped down, the diffraction limits caused by the small and high density CX sensor come into play. The borders and corners show very good resolution for the lower part of the focal range. Towards the tele end, the sharpness drops considerably here.

Typical for a super zoom, distortion and CAs are a bit on the high side. This is also true for vignetting, which comes as a small surprise given the lens' huge dimensions.

The AF drive is fast and silent, the optical stabilization works as promised and on the same high level that we've got used to appreciate on other Nikkor VR lenses. The build quality is very good, but what really sets the lens apart from any competition is its constant physical length throughout the whole zoom range.

The power drive zoom is a welcome feature for movie shooters, but photographers used to the classic approach might soon miss a mechanical focus ring in the field.

The biggest issues of the lens are its size and weight. Since for many one of the main reasons to choose a mirror less system is compactness, Nikon somehow seems to have missed the point in this regard. The quite steep price of the lens doesn't help to make it more attractive. Movie shooters may nonetheless consider it due to its dedicated video-related features. But for those photographers who mainly shoot still images, the two basic kit zooms (10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR) offer better value for less money.
