VerdictEven though the Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR was the first of its kind and has been around for a few years now, it still doesn't look aged and delivers very good performance.
The resolution figures are very good to excellent, but one can expect such sharpness from a macro prime in this class. The same applies to the very low amount of distortion.
CAs are a little pronounced, as are bokeh fringing and vignetting wide open. The lens delivers a smooth and pleasant background blur.
The build quality is on a very high level. Thanks to a silent-wave AF-S drive the lens is compatible with all current Nikon DSLRs and offers fast and near silent autofocus.
So, in summary a very nice lens. However, the Nikkor faces stiff competition from 3rd party manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron, who also offer lenses with a similar feature range now, but at significantly lower prices.
